Good for an overnight stay to board the Shivalik Deluxe Express

Myself and wife, senior citizens, stayed in Hotel Aanchal on 19th June'17 night, to board the Shivalik Deluxe Express at 5:20 am on the next day.We reached the hotel from Chandigarh by a taxi at about 8:30 in the night. Prior to reaching Chandigarh, we started from Trivandrum three days ago on 16th June morning by Sampark Kranti Express. On 19th at around 7 o' clock, we reached Chandigarh railway station. We took a taxi to the hotel for a fare of Rs.700. It was a Tata Indigo AC car. One could bargain for a bit lower fare. The driver was a nice man who told that the distance was about 30 kms.( We later found out from his trip meter that it was only 21 kms). We readily agreed for the fare as it was getting darker, and the hotel itself asked us Rs.1000 to arrange their own car. This was advised to us at the time of room booking. A bubbly and jovial young man named Avinash Singh was manning the front desk.He was performing all the roles from receiving the guests to carrying the baggage to the room. He assured us a trouble-free night when I said that there was a cacophony coming from the street below. He said that as the night grows, the noises will die down. He was the man-Friday of the owner and the soul of the hotel during night time as the other staff left after their working hrs. The owner, Mr. Santhosh Kumar Jain, sounded a gentleman and was very helpful on the phone when I talked to him at the time of room booking. That was a month back to our arrival. We could not meet him. The reception area was a modified stairwell opened to the road. On presenting the email which confirmed our room reservation, Avinash gave the room key with a welcoming smile and asked us to climb the stairs to reach the 1st floor room. There was no elevator. Our room was 101.The best room available; not many choices. The deluxe room had basic provisions for sleep and shower. Do not mind the description 'Deluxe'. It means the best room available in the hotel, a 12x10 ft room almost occupied by a double bed, and attached bathroom with a shower.(No ac rooms and the climate did not necessitate it). The shower was not working. Tapped hot water, soap, fresh towels and a bucket & mug were available. We could not vouch for the linen if washed and afresh. The bathroom doormat was damp and stinking. The hotel did not serve any food or even tea. There were eateries and tea-shops around. The hotel was located at the mouth of the taxi stand-rly stn road. Rly stn is 2km down the road. We got out of the hotel at about 9 pm for dinner. We were told by the passers by, that the not-far-away Krishna cafe was a good place for dinner. It was true. Krishna cafe was an average restaurant with pleasant staff and cosy feeling. There were not many diners inside. A few young couples were sitting here and there. We ordered RaRa chicken, Butter Roti, salad and bottled water. The dishes were very tasty. The price was sensible. We visited the cafe on 19th June, prior to the GST implementation. The Hotel Aanchal was almost fully occupied when we stayed there. The guests were some youngsters of both the sexes, who were on a pilgrimage (we later found out). But we could not find any one of them dining in Krishna cafe. On the next day morning, we were ready to go to the Kalka rly stn by 4:30. Avinash arranged an autorickshaw to take us there. We thanked and tipped him for his care and concern. Any shortcoming in our room facilities was made up by his helpful nature. We reached the rly stn by 5 am. The train was on the platform. We found our carriages and got seated. My wife and I got seats in 2 different carriages at the time of booking. We have been trying to book seats since May 1st week. But got only on 20th June because Apr-June was the peak tourist season. We were very particular to get seats in the morning 5:20 hrs Shivalik Deluxe Express. Many of the past travellers have written in these sites that it was the most sought-after Mountain train in the Kalka-Shimla route. The train did not start at its scheduled time of 5:20 am. We waited up to 6 am to collect some connecting passengers from Delhi. They have reserved seats. The train at last chugged out from Kalka to the morning mist for a 5 hrs journey through the Shivalik Mountain ranges. Before the train chugged out from the platform, a funny incident happened. A bunch of youngsters approached me and asked, "uncle would you mind moving to the last coach? We are all together, came from Delhi. Everybody except one got the seats together in the second coach. But he got it in the last coach. Would you mind exchanging it with him ? We wanted to have fun, all sitting together". I said, "children, no problem. I shall move to his seat. But the train was almost leaving". They said, "do not worry uncle; here we go". In a swish move of effervescence they carried me and my trolley bag on their shoulders and ran to the last coach. They ceremoniously placed me in my new seat. The onlookers were wondering as to what was this howling and merry-making. The journey, as many past writers have written, was magnificent. One had to sit at the right side of the coach while going to Shimla to see the panoramic view. Immediately after the train started its journey, breakfast was served as per our choice made at the time of booking. We were given a packet containing two slices of toasted bread, a double-omelette, and a cool-drink. There was a scheduled stop of 10 mts at the Barog stn. There, one can stroll on the platform or take photos, buy snacks and beverages. The train reached Shimla stn at 11 am. 5 hours of cloud nine. By the way, the train has toilets for emergency use.No racks or storage for heavy luggage. So travel light. At last we were in Shimla stn. Our entry to the "Dev Bhoomi" was done. Note: Be careful not to be lost in the commotion, melee, and uproar. Beware of touts and cheats posing as genuine hotel agents or homestay reps.Pls do not jump in to the confused crowd if one had no hotel booking. Wait till they were gone. Then set out. Our tour of the 'Dev Bhoomy' (HP) was another story. See YMCA Shimla. A few tips: For a south Indian, especially a Keralite, the cheaper and relaxed way to tour Himachal (Shimla-Kullu-Manali) and the city of Chandigarh is through the railways. Book a 1st or 2nd ac (more comfort and moving space), or 3 ac( lesser comfort) to Chandigarh by Sampark Kranti Express. Reach Kalka from Chandigarh by car. Travel to Shimla by Shivalik Deluxe Express. Book online HPTDC's sightseeing tours or spot-book it after you arrived (no guarantee for your choice, take what is available when booked on the spot). Tarvel interstate in HPTDC ac Volvo buses. Travel within state in HRTC ac buses. They are economical and comfortable. The day tours are very comfortable, guided, and most cheapl. HPTDC staff are very very helpful. They walk the talk " ATITHI DEVO BHAVA"( I can vouch that from my experience).Unless and until one has limited time, pls do not hire a car. In Kalka,a small town, there were not many options or choices of the best hotels. Hotel Anchal was one good choice among those available. Similarly Krishna cafe is one of the good restaurants available with tasty food and moderate price.
